Here’s Looking at HUE!

This little blog is expanding to explore a brand new world!

So when thinking about this brand/blog relaunch I did a lot of soul searching. It is easy to blog and at one time or another most people have done some form of blogging. After I started the process of rebranding and relaunching…

Embracing HUE

Today is a celebration of each and every one of you! This Hue & Me Monday I encourage to show the world you are beautiful enough, stylish enough, simply put enough! Project Embrace has created the #IAMENOUGHDAY campaign to challenge the stereotypes of what is considered beautiful hair.

Declaring March 31st as “I AM ENOUGH DAY” the campaign encourages women to ditch the weaves and embrace their natural hair.

I originally came across Project Embrace on instagram and instantly liked the campaign. Two years ago I explored the stereotypes surrounding natural hair in the “corporate world” and the role the media plays  for my graduate school thesis…so naturally, I feel a connection to a project that supports the celebration of diversity.

Per their Facebook Project Embrace plans to encourage the UK government to regulate the of sales of chemical relaxers by placing age restrictions (which I personally love)

To learn more about the mission of Project Embrace visit their website or view their recent interview on Black Visions Television.

The work that Project Embrace is doing is truly a celebration of Hue and me by encouraging each of us to embrace our beauty.

Be sure to join the celebration #IAMENOUGHDAY

Look Great While You Do Good

The name says it all. As vain as it may sound we all want to look great, but we all know that looking good starts from the inside out and that is why I love the partnership between Iman cosmetics and the Sisters Network Inc. The mission is to get 5000 women of color under the age of 45 registered for this program that aids in resources for breast health and awareness.

As a woman of color under 45 year of age whose doctor recently found a benign tumor in my breast I know all to well the importance of education, awareness, and resources. I am grateful that I had the resources that I needed. That is why I love what the Iconic Iman is doing to raise awareness.

During the month of October when you purchase the IMAN Pink Luxury Lip Stain the cosmetic company will donate a percentage to the Sisters Network Inc.

Reflections of Hue

Screen shot 2013-09-07 at 12.41.04 PM

A little over a week ago this blog celebrated it’s blog anniversary (August 29th). It is amazing how quickly a year can go by. I am grateful beyond words for all of the wonderful opportunities that have come my way in the last twelve months. To truly reflect I decided to step away from writing, media, blogging for a bit to make sure that I am staying true to my mission and vision for A Stylish Hue.

My hope in creating A Stylish Hue  was to celebrate Healthy Unique Diverse Empowering images of women of color in a way that I could combine by background in fashion and media. Over the past year I have had the unique honor of connecting with other bloggers, fashion designers, fitness organization, book publishing companies, and PR companies. Not to mention that I have been honored with blogging awards. Wow! I really just wanted to showcase positive images of women of color and offer resources that would help them to be empowered to thrive and live their best life. With each day that passes I am filled with gratitude beyond words to each and everyone of hue for joining me on this journey.

With love from me to hue,

Virginia Loves Style & Success

Nearly a month ago Virginia crowned it’s newest Miss America state titleholder. I must say that I am inspired and extremely impressed with the new Miss Virginia and I’ve never met her.

“Miss Virginia 2013 is Desiree Williams. She is a 2nd year graduate student at Hampton University. Her platform issue is Fit and Fun!” Is the description of Miss Williams on the Miss Virginia MAO Facebook fan page.

So to kick off Thriving Thursday I want to do something to help the next generation of queens in the Spirit of Style by offering free interview/communication and style consulting to  pageant hopefuls who are interested in scholarship based pageants age eighteen (18) and up who are  women of color. Why exclusively to women color you may ask? As a woman of color myself who has been in pageantry, media, fashion, and life in general I understand the stereotypes  and sadly have experienced some myself in the areas beauty, talent, style, achievement, and success. Instead of complaining about it. I am choosing to pay it forward and share my experiences and help another your lady thrive.

If you are interested all you have to do is complete the contact form on this site and explain why you interested in a scholarship pageant, your platform/social cause issue, and why you think you need help. I will select three (3) women to work with on a one-on-one basis for six sessions (length of each session to be determined).

You maybe wondering what in the world does this have to do with style and beauty?….. Well, as a semi-retired pageant girl who holds an undergraduate degree in fashion and masters in new media journalism I can assure you that communication and style play a large role in pageantry….so stay tuned!

Disclaimer: I am not a current or past local, state, or national Miss America titleholder and this offer is no way affiliated with any system or program. Clients will be selected at the discretion of “Sophia Styles” and the selection process is final. Free services, training, or consulting does not guarantee placement or winning on any level. And client will not hold this blog, owner, or publisher(s) responsible for any negative experiences.

Lovin’ the Spirit of a #BabyGirl

I love the concept of using fashion for good….you know making your voice count. Showcasing the spirit and substance of style instead of just using your voice to talk about how much you paid for “X” label or making someone feel not worthy because  they can’t or choose not to buy into the hype around the latest trend. A few months ago I shared a story about two young women who were on a mission to help other young women who are in need get a dress for prom. Since that time I’ve thought about the ways people use fashion for good and have drawn the conclusion that they need to be showcased. The result is a new blog series that I created for my website called the spirit of style and a few weeks ago I found my inspiration for my newest post when I stumbled across the Baby Girl collection by actor Shemar Moore. Criminal Minds fans know the term “Baby Girl” as it is often used throughout the show when Moore who plays FBI agent Derek Morgan refers to Penelope Garcia played by Kirsten Vangsness.

I knew without reservation knew I was going to buy something after I learned that a portion of the proceeds from collection will go to raise awareness for multiple sclerosis (MS) which Moore’s mother has. I have to admit as a woman who holds a bachelor’s degree in fashion that also has a parent with an illness I’ve been saying to myself…DUH!!!…why didn’t I think of that?!?! Create a collection that raises awareness of a serious issue because I must confess that  I now view  health, life, and advocacy in a different way since life changed for this parent.

I purchased the black cap with red writing. The cap arrived ahead of the scheduled arrival date and I was blown away by the great stitching detail of the logo. The true test was to see if my shoulder length natural curly hair would fit under the cap since I often wear my hair pulled back when working behind the scenes in media. I am happy to say that the hat fit link a gem.

Roughly a week ago Moore posted on one of his social media pages that there is a possibility that new colors could be offered within the collection and my eye immediately gravitated to my favorite color.….now I can admit that I am probably the only woman in a America who would rock a black cap with orange writing….but this comes from a girl who believes in celebrating uniqueness.

In a world where it seems that just about every celebrity or athlete has some sort of fashion brand or label. I applaud Mr. Moore for using his voice to raise awareness for a good cause.
