Working Wednesday : Guest Blogger Claire Hastings

Image is everything

Clothes may not make the man, but a lady’s attire is a key element that makes first impressions in the business arena. Various studies have shown that multiple aspects of physical appearance (from build, height, and weight to shape, grooming, facial features, general attractiveness and choice of clothes) can make – as well as break – a businessperson’s chance at success.

But while the correlation between looks and career success is pretty straightforward for men, the climb up the corporate ladder can get a bit trickier if you’re a lady who’s not afraid to rock her natural beauty while pursuing professional achievement.

Dress to Impress

Beauty might not be skin-deep, but a survey carried out by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) showed that a candidate’s appearance at the job interview can lose them an opportunity   to impress their future employer by real-life performance in a blink.  Just less than six months ago the 11th circuit court of appeals dismissed a lawsuit against a company that refused to hire her because of her locs.

According to the study, a candidate’s grooming and attire are prime eyebrow raisers for job interviewers, but body art such as tattoos and piercings aren’t far behind either. Though not as vital as grooming, choice of clothes, body alterations, hair color and hairstyle ranked high on the list of physical attributes that affected employers’ impressions.

The study findings are clear: your employer-to-be may not judge a book by its cover, but they will certainly judge your interview look and use it as a criterion in job candidate evaluation. So what is your take? We want to hear from you. Have you felt the need to change your look to earn your “dream job”

As you make your way in the work wold it maybe hard to dress the part while staying true to yourself so below you will find some job interview outfit inspirations:

True Beauty Tuesday: Law of Nature Cosmetics

Law of Nature Cosmetics

I am sure excited that I found another cosmetic brand that offers gluten-free products with women of color in mind! Let me introduce you to  Law of Nature Cosmetics. I always visit the “about” section on every website that I visit to get their backstory. Just a few sentences in I must admit that I was pleasantly amazed at their mission. I know that some beauty lovers only want to look great, but I personally believe that one should be able to look great without causing harm to themselves due to toxic ingredients in their beauty products.

After reading the story of Jasmine Rose, the founder I quickly added Law of Cosmetics to my must buy list. Sadly, like to many women I too have had a loved one with Breast Cancer and I applaud Ms. Rose for reaching safe natural ways for women to showcase their beauty without having to subject themselves to harsh chemicals.

The cosmetic line offers several products that  are not only gluten free, but vegan, talc free, paraben free, bismuth free, and while you may not think “Who cares…..why does that matter?” I invite to research some of your favorite brands (several of which are  targeted to women of color) and health issues related to chemicals used in those products and you will know why it truly matters. Like I said I have already added several of Law of Cosmetics items to my must buy list. Want to see what I picked? Visit me on our sister site Loving Hue & Your Style… Right now.

True Beauty Tuesday: Gold Label Cosmetics

Gold Label

I am always do the happy dance when I find gluten-free items especially beauty brands. I have been on the hunt for gluten-free brands that embrace women of color for what seems like forever! I don’t think that it is my chance that I found Gold Label Cosmetics du ring the season of miracles. I just wished that I would have found them before my trip to New York City a few weeks ago. I would have rocked their lipsticks because well….HELLO! they look wonderful! One thing that I love is that they show the lipsticks on very different skins tones. This is a plus for me because as any woman of color knows what looks good on one skin tone can be a hot mess on another.

As I scrolled down their Twitter page and website I saying “Yes” and “I need this one too”.

Be sure to check my this evening on our sister site Loving Hue & Your Style for my personal style picks.

Give the gift of beauty

Chronic Beauty 2016

This is the season of giving. Earlier today I made a post about celebrating Giving Tuesday more than one day. This is the season of giving. and if we are truly going to celebrate the spirit of giving then it should include giving that will impact the lives of others in a positive way all year long so I am happy to welcome you to the 2016 Holiday Giving Series.

Our first feature is the Chronic Beauty Campaign , a program created by Lyme Warrior to raise awareness for those that suffer daily with chronic illness. The Center for Disease, Control, and Prevention website reports that “As of 2012, about half of all adults—117 million people—had one or more chronic health conditions.” Which means you or someone that you know suffers from some type of chronic illness. I have battled with Chronic Migraines since my earlier twenties so I know first hand how struggling with a health issue that the world can’t see impacts your life.

The Chronic Beauty Campaign offers you the chance get into the spirit of giving this season via The Chronic Beauty cosmetic bag or calendar which is available for  purchase via their website.

The  Chronic Beauty calendars features a different women battling chronic illness each month. Conditions featured in the calendar include: Cerebral Palsy, Severe Asthma, Lupus, Essential Tremor, Stroke, Diabetes, Chronic Migraines, Degenerative Disk Disease, Huntington’s Disease, Kidney Disease/Diabetes, Lyme Disease, and more.
