True Beauty Tuesday: The Taraji P. Henson collection

True Beauty Tuesday is back! To kick things off I wanted to showcase a beauty collection that did so well that a few of the products sold out right after the launch. Of course I am talking about none other than Taraji P. Henson’s collection for MAC cosmetics. Although I have not tried the collection for myself I must say the collection grabbed my attention because it makes beauty simple and would personally use the shades in there collection year round. I love the the beautyistas that can work magic with shading and contouring, however I am not one of those gals. I just can’t work that magic. Taraji’s line looks so easy to use that I buy it I mean who doesn’t want to be fierce and fab like Cookie?

True Beauty Tuesday: Iwilla Remedy

Last week I made the first ever combo post. Combining True Beauty Tuesday (TrueBeautyTuesday) and Web Window Shopping Wednesday (#WebWindowShoppingWednesday) called True Beauty Window shopping featuring Iwilla Remedy.

As mentioned in my last post the ladies (the owners) where wonderful enough to send me several samples to review for my post. I can’t say enough how wonderful the items are….so great in fact it earned them two post because well one was just not enough.

In my first post I featured their gluten-free I love my armpit deodorant (which I am still using by the way), but I also wanted to highlight a few of the other items that I received and share with you my “Must have item”

Herbal Insect Repellent:

Let me just say I don’t think that I have ever come across a repellent with such a wonderful scent….when I shared it with others they questioned if it was repellent because it had such a nice smell.

My Skin Glows Cream:

I shared this product with both men and women and received the same response…..  “Ummmm where did you get this….I want some!” I think that says enough.

Speckled Blood Orange Natural Lip Balm:

I share this product with someone who has loves to be outside in the Summer and likes to keep her skin and lips hydrated without be greasy (she really hates greasy stuff). She loved the coverage of the product and said that her lips felt really good.

My Must have item:

My Must have item is the I Love My Armpits Natural Deodorant the travel size version. As a person who has spent a lot of time on the road traveling for work I can’t explain to you have I love this product. Natural, travel-size, deodorant and a reasonable price…simply priceless. My advice to you is if you are going to be traveling anywhere soon this is the item to pick up.

Happy #TrueBeautyTuesday!

There is no better way to return to True Beauty Tuesday ( #TrueBeautyTuesday) than with the one and only IMAN. A few days ago I noticed the Iman cosmetics instagram page that a wonderful new service is now available for beauties of color.

The Iman Cosmetics beauty APP for iOS users is simply put amazing!….and I don’t even have an iPhone (I am going to try it out on my MAC—if I can). Let me tell you why I love this APP… you see as a woman of color I can’t tell you how many times I have stood in the middle of the store debating what color is going to “work” for me. The idea that I can take a picture and the APP does the work for me just makes my day and you want to know what’s even better? It’s FREE, yup I said free! Another great feature of the APP is that it offers you options that help you achieve other looks. Do you need an everyday look, glamourous evening look, or maybe you want to follow the latest trends? Well, then you are in luck because this APP can help you.

So stop standing in the middle of the store debating which color will look best and whip out your iPhone and take a selfie in the name of beauty.

Check out the two videos below for more information.

With love from me to hue,

Dear Black Beauty, I have a message for you…

You might as well be sleeping under a rock if you haven’t heard of Lupita Nyong’o. The recent  Oscar winner has clearly made a name for herself not just because of her talent but also because of her undeniable grace, style, and beauty. I have been a fan of Ms. Nyong’o since I first came across here work, but as a  educated woman of color with a background in fashion and media I must say I tip my hat to this woman for addressing an issue that is still very real….the image of “beauty” The below video is from her speech at the Essence  Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon . I invite you to watch it and be moved…I was….and will continue to be.

With Love from Me to Hue!

Look Great While You Do Good

The name says it all. As vain as it may sound we all want to look great, but we all know that looking good starts from the inside out and that is why I love the partnership between Iman cosmetics and the Sisters Network Inc. The mission is to get 5000 women of color under the age of 45 registered for this program that aids in resources for breast health and awareness.

As a woman of color under 45 year of age whose doctor recently found a benign tumor in my breast I know all to well the importance of education, awareness, and resources. I am grateful that I had the resources that I needed. That is why I love what the Iconic Iman is doing to raise awareness.

During the month of October when you purchase the IMAN Pink Luxury Lip Stain the cosmetic company will donate a percentage to the Sisters Network Inc.

Even if you don’t wear pink lipstick….do a little good.

All tied up

As a  consultant and  media professional in the fashion and lifestyle industry I get the great blessing of reviewing products from time to time. That is what happened this Summer. I had the unique pleasure of being gifted a dress from designer Von Vonni. Vonni, has dressed some notable names such as model and Real Housewife of Atlanta Cynthia Bailey and athletic great, Serena Williams. So as you can imagine this little girl from Virginia was extremely honored that I had been honored with such a gift.

Known for his “Transformer” dress which is a concept that he developed while studying at F.I.T. Vonni’s dress design offers up several looks  in one dress. …so many that I had an extremely hard time deciding what look that I wanted to wear for the event I was attending. A creative spirit like myself had a great time time tying the dress up down and all around for the event I was going to.

I couldn’t resist snapping this shadow picture of the Von Vonni dress. You know it’s a great dress when even the shadow looks amazing.

I had the great opportunity to attend the 2nd Annual Pink Queen’s for Life pageant which is a fundraiser pageant for Breast Cancer Awareness.  I couldn’t have been more pleased with the dress because it seemed like Divine intervention that the team from Vonni sent me a beautiful dress in a “Dusty Rose” color. As you can imagine I was pleased to have a pink dress to wear in support of the event.

I received a free dress from  Von vonni for use in connection with this blog.

Virginia Loves Style & Success

Nearly a month ago Virginia crowned it’s newest Miss America state titleholder. I must say that I am inspired and extremely impressed with the new Miss Virginia and I’ve never met her.

“Miss Virginia 2013 is Desiree Williams. She is a 2nd year graduate student at Hampton University. Her platform issue is Fit and Fun!” Is the description of Miss Williams on the Miss Virginia MAO Facebook fan page.

So to kick off Thriving Thursday I want to do something to help the next generation of queens in the Spirit of Style by offering free interview/communication and style consulting to  pageant hopefuls who are interested in scholarship based pageants age eighteen (18) and up who are  women of color. Why exclusively to women color you may ask? As a woman of color myself who has been in pageantry, media, fashion, and life in general I understand the stereotypes  and sadly have experienced some myself in the areas beauty, talent, style, achievement, and success. Instead of complaining about it. I am choosing to pay it forward and share my experiences and help another your lady thrive.

If you are interested all you have to do is complete the contact form on this site and explain why you interested in a scholarship pageant, your platform/social cause issue, and why you think you need help. I will select three (3) women to work with on a one-on-one basis for six sessions (length of each session to be determined).

You maybe wondering what in the world does this have to do with style and beauty?….. Well, as a semi-retired pageant girl who holds an undergraduate degree in fashion and masters in new media journalism I can assure you that communication and style play a large role in pageantry….so stay tuned!

Disclaimer: I am not a current or past local, state, or national Miss America titleholder and this offer is no way affiliated with any system or program. Clients will be selected at the discretion of “Sophia Styles” and the selection process is final. Free services, training, or consulting does not guarantee placement or winning on any level. And client will not hold this blog, owner, or publisher(s) responsible for any negative experiences.
