Image is everything

Clothes may not make the man, but a lady’s attire is a key element that makes first impressions in the business arena. Various studies have shown that multiple aspects of physical appearance (from build, height, and weight to shape, grooming, facial features, general attractiveness and choice of clothes) can make – as well as break – a businessperson’s chance at success.

But while the correlation between looks and career success is pretty straightforward for men, the climb up the corporate ladder can get a bit trickier if you’re a lady who’s not afraid to rock her natural beauty while pursuing professional achievement.

Dress to Impress

Beauty might not be skin-deep, but a survey carried out by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) showed that a candidate’s appearance at the job interview can lose them an opportunity   to impress their future employer by real-life performance in a blink.  Just less than six months ago the 11th circuit court of appeals dismissed a lawsuit against a company that refused to hire her because of her locs.

According to the study, a candidate’s grooming and attire are prime eyebrow raisers for job interviewers, but body art such as tattoos and piercings aren’t far behind either. Though not as vital as grooming, choice of clothes, body alterations, hair color and hairstyle ranked high on the list of physical attributes that affected employers’ impressions.

The study findings are clear: your employer-to-be may not judge a book by its cover, but they will certainly judge your interview look and use it as a criterion in job candidate evaluation. So what is your take? We want to hear from you. Have you felt the need to change your look to earn your “dream job”

As you make your way in the work wold it maybe hard to dress the part while staying true to yourself so below you will find some job interview outfit inspirations:

True Beauty Tuesday: “Choose Love” campaign

Love is in the air in more ways than one. Singer Ciara recently announced on social media that she is not only the newest global ambassador for Revlon, but she will also be the face of their “Choose Love” campaign. Personally, I think she will be a great spokesperson especially for the “Choose Love” campaign. The singer has been living a life that reminds me of a fairytale. Earlier this year she wed Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson after courtship that would melt just about anyone.

The “Choose Love” campaign is like nothing I have ever seen before in a good way. It seems that to often beauty and style brands try to “sell” you on what you need to fix about yourself to attract the perfect mate and how their products can save the day, and while I know the goal of every brand is to create revenue this campaign reminds you to look take time to love yourself first. On their website they offer several ways to do so, and yes it does involve make-up, but not in the way that you think.  After watching the video  and reading the Revlon Love Test Instructions.

I realized something that most women do or should I say don’t do…. and that is take care or love themselves EVERY day first. Women often place everyone above themselves until they sadly realize that they have taken themselves off the list of things to take care. Having  grown up in the south I have always heard that you can’t love anyone else until you can love yourself so I invite you to join me for one week and take the Revlon love test. Will you “Choose Love”?

True Beauty Tuesday:Khoudia Diop

When I originally started True Beauty Tuesday a few years back I wanted to to be more that just beauty products (there is nothing wrong with that), but like I have always said my goal is to celebrate, educate, and empower HUE to HUE.

There are times in your life when you come across a beauty so amazing to the eye that you just wan to cry. It happened for me when I say Khoudia Diop. Never in my life have I seen a woman hold such beauty. NEVER. Her melanin skin makes me value my skin tone even more than ever and while I am sure she has experienced her fair share of rude people I want to take this moment to send nothing but love to her.Screen Shot 2016-10-05 at 4.33.45 PM.png

True Beauty Tuesday: The Taraji P. Henson collection

True Beauty Tuesday is back! To kick things off I wanted to showcase a beauty collection that did so well that a few of the products sold out right after the launch. Of course I am talking about none other than Taraji P. Henson’s collection for MAC cosmetics. Although I have not tried the collection for myself I must say the collection grabbed my attention because it makes beauty simple and would personally use the shades in there collection year round. I love the the beautyistas that can work magic with shading and contouring, however I am not one of those gals. I just can’t work that magic. Taraji’s line looks so easy to use that I buy it I mean who doesn’t want to be fierce and fab like Cookie?

Black Lives Matter

One of my goals in rebooting this blog was to explore more lifestyle topics in addition to fashion and beauty as it relates to black women. So I have to address what’s going on in the world. As a black woman the last few days have been hard for me. It never get easier when you see a black man gunned down. NEVER…..and it shouldn’t. Those black lives (as all of them) mean something. Yet again families are missing a spirit that is gone way to soon. No family should have to feel this ever. I have spent the last few days thinking about how one person can create change. Yes, the world if full of racist evil people, but I will not let them  still my joy, shine, or my life. The last few days I have wondered how my grandmothers and mother lived in a time when this type of hatred  legal was common place and lived to tell about. Creating change happens on many levels with a many different people working towards a common goal. It will not be easy, because the struggle is real. I will continue to pray, work, give, celebrate, educate, vote and uplift, etc. because Black Lives Matter! Each and every one of them.

You can’t say that All Lives Matter until my Black Life Matters too!

with love from me to HUE,

Sophia
