This little blog is expanding to explore a brand new world!

So when thinking about this brand/blog relaunch I did a lot of soul searching. It is easy to blog and at one time or another most people have done some form of blogging. After I started the process of rebranding and relaunching…

Style Spotlight Saturday- RVA Fashion Week

It’s that time of a year again Ladies & Gents. RVA Fashion Week. I have to admit that I have a real soft spot in my heart for RVA Fashion week. If you are first time visitor to this blog or if you have never been to my social media pages (shame on you).  You maybe wondering why in the world would I care so much about a fashion week in Richmond, VA. Well, it all started way back in the 90’s when I was a fashion student at VCU. Back then the major fashion show was the one put on by the department of fashion. It makes me happy to see the Richmond style force growing. If you have never been to the city I invite you to take a trip to the “Cap City” you will find all kind of style around just about every corner.  The week long celebration of style kicked off last week and is still going strong. Stylish events are happening all over the city. You are going to get more than the traditional runway show so if you are looking for something to do this weekend unleash your inner style Goddess (or God) and attend a RVA Fashion week event.

Dear Black Beauty, I have a message for you…

You might as well be sleeping under a rock if you haven’t heard of Lupita Nyong’o. The recent  Oscar winner has clearly made a name for herself not just because of her talent but also because of her undeniable grace, style, and beauty. I have been a fan of Ms. Nyong’o since I first came across here work, but as a  educated woman of color with a background in fashion and media I must say I tip my hat to this woman for addressing an issue that is still very real….the image of “beauty” The below video is from her speech at the Essence  Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon . I invite you to watch it and be moved…I was….and will continue to be.

With Love from Me to Hue!

All tied up

As a  consultant and  media professional in the fashion and lifestyle industry I get the great blessing of reviewing products from time to time. That is what happened this Summer. I had the unique pleasure of being gifted a dress from designer Von Vonni. Vonni, has dressed some notable names such as model and Real Housewife of Atlanta Cynthia Bailey and athletic great, Serena Williams. So as you can imagine this little girl from Virginia was extremely honored that I had been honored with such a gift.

Known for his “Transformer” dress which is a concept that he developed while studying at F.I.T. Vonni’s dress design offers up several looks  in one dress. …so many that I had an extremely hard time deciding what look that I wanted to wear for the event I was attending. A creative spirit like myself had a great time time tying the dress up down and all around for the event I was going to.

I couldn’t resist snapping this shadow picture of the Von Vonni dress. You know it’s a great dress when even the shadow looks amazing.

I had the great opportunity to attend the 2nd Annual Pink Queen’s for Life pageant which is a fundraiser pageant for Breast Cancer Awareness.  I couldn’t have been more pleased with the dress because it seemed like Divine intervention that the team from Vonni sent me a beautiful dress in a “Dusty Rose” color. As you can imagine I was pleased to have a pink dress to wear in support of the event.

I received a free dress from  Von vonni for use in connection with this blog.

True Colors

True beauty Tuesday is all about celebrating you, your beauty, and the things that truly embrace every unique part of hue. What better way to do it than unleashing your true colors.

I was beyond excited when I read the IFB Project #105: What’s Your Signature Color and couldn’t pass it up.

To me nothing says “Hello World” like rocking you favorite color….or as I like to phrase it “My Trademark Color” If you haven’t picked up on it by the color selection of my blog my ….I’ll have to confess…it’s orange! In every shade for every season… simply orange.

My favorite orange look is a  soft beautifully sheer sequined top that I purchased from a boutique called B. Moss that is sadly no longer in business.toya_orange_headshopt

From my glasses to my car….you guessed it….Orange. While some girls feel “Pretty in Pink” I often think of my grandmother who embraced my love for the color orange… she would tell me every time she saw a beautiful garment in orange and she would say “…orange you beautiful”

The Alicia Marie collection by Rogiani

In the same fashion that an A-list celebrity inspires you to purchase a handbag, shoes cosmetics, or formal gown by simply “working it” you can receive the same inspiration from fashionable fitness wear. Which brings us to our weekly dose of fashionably fit Friday.

I love it when I just seem to stumble up a website with such great finds that is also super inspiring. Enter the Alicia Marie collection by Rogiani.  WOW! The first ever Ms. Muscle & Fitness (2006) has given me a whole new outlook on “Get her look” that we often see in fashion magazine, or read about on blogs. “The Queen of Hearts” and “Rebel collections” truly embrace the spunky, fun, and creative side of fitness apparel.

The traditionally fashionably fit fashionista need not worry. Alicia  Marie also offers some classic pieces with chic flare.

Virginia Loves Style & Success

Nearly a month ago Virginia crowned it’s newest Miss America state titleholder. I must say that I am inspired and extremely impressed with the new Miss Virginia and I’ve never met her.

“Miss Virginia 2013 is Desiree Williams. She is a 2nd year graduate student at Hampton University. Her platform issue is Fit and Fun!” Is the description of Miss Williams on the Miss Virginia MAO Facebook fan page.

So to kick off Thriving Thursday I want to do something to help the next generation of queens in the Spirit of Style by offering free interview/communication and style consulting to  pageant hopefuls who are interested in scholarship based pageants age eighteen (18) and up who are  women of color. Why exclusively to women color you may ask? As a woman of color myself who has been in pageantry, media, fashion, and life in general I understand the stereotypes  and sadly have experienced some myself in the areas beauty, talent, style, achievement, and success. Instead of complaining about it. I am choosing to pay it forward and share my experiences and help another your lady thrive.

If you are interested all you have to do is complete the contact form on this site and explain why you interested in a scholarship pageant, your platform/social cause issue, and why you think you need help. I will select three (3) women to work with on a one-on-one basis for six sessions (length of each session to be determined).

You maybe wondering what in the world does this have to do with style and beauty?….. Well, as a semi-retired pageant girl who holds an undergraduate degree in fashion and masters in new media journalism I can assure you that communication and style play a large role in pageantry….so stay tuned!

Disclaimer: I am not a current or past local, state, or national Miss America titleholder and this offer is no way affiliated with any system or program. Clients will be selected at the discretion of “Sophia Styles” and the selection process is final. Free services, training, or consulting does not guarantee placement or winning on any level.
